Science and business

Our expertise for your success

The University of Hohenheim offers business and private persons many different possibilities to get involved.
We strive for a partnership-based dialog with commercial companies and contribute our scientific expertise to joint projects.

Are you a representative of a company and are interested in exchanging expertise with us? Then get in touch with our contacts in the Transfer and Fundraising/Business Contacts units. We will be happy to help you and guide you through the process.

The university can collaborate with the business community in three main ways. These are each subject to their own requirements and conditions, which determine the possibilities of contractual and tax arrangements. Differences arise particularly with regard to the rights to the results of the work. The forms of cooperation are:

Contract research    |    Cooperative/collaborative research    |    Scientific services

Contract research

Contract research is characterized by the university providing a research, development, or other service that has been commissioned and remunerated by another party, usually a company from the business sector. Since this involves an exchange of services, the university is engaged in commercial activity and must therefore observe the relevant commercial, legal, and tax conditions. If the university, as a publicly funded institution, offers its services on the market, it must do so at market prices.

As a company, you are welcome to contact our researchers directly in order to develop and agree on the content of possible research assignments. The binding preparation of the offer is carried out by the university and is supported in terms of calculation and legal aspects by the Research Support Department. If no separate agreement is made, the terms and conditions of the University of Hohenheim apply.

Typically, intellectual property arising from contract research is transferred to the contracting party. It should be noted, however, that the transfer of inventions or patents arising in the course of the provision of services shall be effected separately and likewise only against payment of a remuneration customary on the market.

As a researcher at the University engaging in contract research, please observe the internal guidelines and contact the Research Support Department at an early stage for support with calculating costs and legal assistance.

Collaborative research

Collaborative research is characterized by two or more equal research partners pursuing a common goal. In these types of projects, the partners are responsible for their own costs and there is no exchange of services between them for a fee. Often, funds from public funding bodies are applied for jointly within the framework of a cooperative project. In most cases, these funds are forwarded by a coordinating partner if successful.

In order to regulate the legal relationship between the partners, especially with regard to the use of the resulting knowledge and intellectual property (IP), a cooperation agreement must be concluded. Our researchers receive legal support from the Research Support Department.

As a researcher at the University of Hohenheim, please observe the internal guidelines and contact the Research Support Department at an early stage for legal support with the cooperation agreement.

Scientific services

Scientific services are not aimed at the acquisition of new scientific knowledge, but at the application of existing scientific knowledge and procedures.

Various institutions of the University of Hohenheim offer a wide range of scientific services. Interested parties can find the valid price lists here. The price lists are valid for 12 months and are updated regularly.

Institutions are assisted by the Research Support Department in calculating price lists and preparing proposals. Please contact us at an early stage.

GTC

The University is subject to legal requirements. Offers for services provided by the University are therefore always submitted with contractual conditions that reflect this.
