Hit the pool!  [12.07.22]

You really need to cool down? You can! We'll tell you where!

It's swimming time in Stuttgart!

Now that the weather is finally feeling like summer, you will surely feel the need to cool down in a pool, relax with friends or maybe you just want to swim a few laps to clear your head - but what are your options in and around Stuttgart?

In Stuttgart, there are a few very nice public swimming pools that you can visit from Monday to Sunday.

When you want to visit one of those pools you can buy your ticket online or directly at the entrance door. So the first thing that you have to do is decide which one you want to visit and for this, you can visit stuttgartbaeder.de to learn more about the pools. There are also pictures and overviews of each of the pools.

We have visited three of them so far:

Freibad Mohringen

We have been there for just a couple of hours, swam some laps and tanned on the large green area. It is also very close to Hohenheim, making it especially attractive. To get there, take U3 Vaihingen Bf and switch into U6 Flughafen/Messe at Vaihinger Straße. Get off at Möhringen Freibad. From the beginning of June to the end of August, the pool is open Mon - Fri from 7:00am - 8:30pm, and Sat + Sun from 9:00am - 8:30pm. Before and after that, shorter opening hours apply, which you can find on the website.
Students pay €2.70 for a day ticket (bring your student ID!), a 10-ticket (11th entry free!) costs €27. If you swim regularly, you can get a season ticket for 53€. If you are a thrifty person, you can come less than 30 minutes before the ticket office closes and swim for 1.90€. Mind you, you only have about 30min, so be quick. :)

Rosental Vaihingen

If you are more the adventurous type, this is the pool for you! It has a very big slide (100m in length, +10m high) which makes you feel like a kid again. In 2021, it was voted Stuttgart's best outdoor pool. The opening hours and prices are the same as at Freibad Möhringen. Take U3 to Vaihingen Bf, then either walk all the way to the pool (1.2km) or take bus 84 Universität (Schleife) to Krehlstraße, then walk the remaining 357m to the swimming pool.

Höhenfreibad Killesberg

The nicest thing about this location is that is just next to Killesberg Park. You can combine several things here: Explore the Killesberg Park, climb the Killesberg Tower and then cool off in the Höhenfreibad. And if you were dragged to the pool by friends but don't like water - there are also offers for sports in the field: volleyball, ball games, table tennis. There really is something for everyone here.
Opening hours and prices are the same as at the Möhringen and Rosental pools.

How to buy tickets online?

Use the website to buy tickets online. Register on the website, then select the tickets you want to buy. Make sure you make use of your student discount: select "Einzeleintritt ermäßigt" for a reduced single ticket. You can pay by card or Paypal.

Services

Whichever pool you visit, you will find changing rooms, lockers and of course showers. There is also a kiosk to buy snacks such as fries ("Pommes" in German :) ), sausages, ice cream, soft drinks and beer, and other options depending on the location you are.

Note on FKK

Some pools may have a separate area for FKK - so here's another little lesson on German culture:
What is FKK? FKK means nude culture. It's nothing sexual - followers of the nudist movement simply feel more comfortable without clothes. So don't be alarmed if you accidentally end up in a separate area of the pool and no one is wearing clothes. Just turn around, there's plenty of space for visitors who prefer to stay dressed.

Even more pools to visit:

Das Leuze

This pool, well it is actually a mineral spa, opens its doors from 6:00am to 11:00pm, with regular pool access until 9:00pm.
Note: FKK swimming is possible here in the evening hours from 9:00pm to 11:00pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays. The saunas are open until 11:00pm. Here you can also get a massage for an additional fee, or join in with free water aerobics between 7:00am and 12:00pm (or until 9:00am on weekends).
Price-wise, the Leuze is considerably more expensive, but you should have experienced this bath once. Reduced price is €11.20 for the whole day, €7.60 for two hours.
Take bus 70 Ruhbank (Fernsehturm), then U7 Mönchfeld. Change into U2 Neugereut at Charlottenplatz (exit U7 and use the stairs in the middle of the station). Get off at Mercedesstraße and walk the remaining 500m.

Das Fildorado

This swimming pool has many attractions: Slides, (aqua)fitness, beach sports, sauna, wellness, spa - it's all here. The adventure pool is open Mon - Sat from 9:00am to 10:30pm, and Sun from 9:00am to 9:30pm; the outdoor pool opens at 8:00am (until 9:00pm). The reduced price for the adventure pool is €8.10 for 2 hours. The price increases by 80 cents per 20 minutes. You pay a maximum of €14.50 (from 280 minutes). For the outdoor pool, you pay €3.20 (student price).
Take bus 76 Echterdingen, exit at Bonlanden Nord and take bus 813 Plattenhardt - Flughafen Messe until Bonlanden Fildorado.

ENJOY!
