The Department of Food Microbiology and Hygiene (150a) is looking for a qualified research student assistant (m/f/d) with a monthly working time of 40 hours for three months from July-September 2020. The job involves microbiological and molecular biology work in a level 2 safety laboratory. Therefore, for safety reasons, only people with sufficient relevant laboratory experience, preferably from the master's degree course in Food Biotechnology, are considered for.
Dept. of Plant Systems Biology (190d)
The Department of Plant Systems Biology (190d) is looking for 2 student assistants (m/f/d):
Job 1: Job description: Data mining of plasmodesmal proteins from different plant species and establishment of a database structure. Your job will be to consolidate information from public resources about proteins localized in plasmodesmata and establish the basic structure of a local database of these proteins. Working hours: flexible, anything from 40h to 80h. The job is compatible with work at home, otherwise office space can be provided. Skills: Excel advanced skills, basic knowledge of a skripting language (R, python), basic knowledge in Access, SQL or similar.

Job 2: The Department of Plant System Biology is also looking for an enthusiastic person to help in phenotyping work with Arabidopsis seedlings. You will be doing root growth assay on agar plates comparing different knock-out mutants under different nutrient conditions. The work involves handling of seeds and seedlings under sterile conditions, good skills to carefully handle the seedlings, regular inspection of the growth of plants, scanning of agar plates and evaluation of the results using dedicated software. Work can be arranged in flexible way with flexible hours.

Dept. of Rural Sociology (430a)
The Rural Sociology group at the Institute for Social Sciences in Agriculture is looking for 2 student assistants (m/f/d) the group focuses on the study and the enhancement of social processes in rural areas, taking account of local and regional issues and challenges relating to agricultural land use and rural development.
Job 1:
Context: The i2connect project is a recently started Horizon 2020 project that aims to fuel the competencies of advisors to support and facilitate interactive innovation processes. Interactive innovation emphasizes cooperation among various actors, the sharing of knowledge and effective intermediation between actors along the value chains and at different territorial levels. This requires awareness, new tools and methods, motivational and organisational approaches for advisors.
Within the frame of the project activities, one ongoing task is to update knowledge on the German Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS).AKIS is a concept that is used to describe the whole knowledge exchange system in which people and institutions engage in mutual learning to generate, share and utilise agriculture-related technology, knowledge and information. The resulting German country report, as one of the 30 EU country reports that will be drafted, will highlight the main actors in the German AKIS and reveal essential features of the institutional and infrastructural environment in which advisors operate.This information will then serve as a basis for targeted interventions to support different types of cooperation between AKIS actors in solving problems.
Frame of HIWI activities:
- Carry out a desktop research on German AKIS and advisory services
- Summarise main content of important documents (in German to English)
- Possibly some email and phone correspondences in German with stakeholders in the various organisations
- Support in the analysis of surveys (in the later phases)
Key requirements:
- Fluent German speaking student (and of course English)
- Preferably some basic understanding or knowledge of advisory services

Job 2:
Context: The department partners in the SERVInnov project, which aims at strengthening, multiplying and promulgating innovations which have significant positive impacts on food and nutrition security through improvement of agriculture and agrifood systems. Innovations within agriculture and across food systems are crucial in facilitating the private sectors’ (from smallholder to big companies) moves in realizing economic growth and inclusive development. In order to substantiate improved innovation processes, SERVInnov characterises and assess successful innovation support services and their suppliers to define condition of their performance, promulgation, and scaling.
Within the frame of its SERVInnov’s activities, there is the objective to design a self-assessment tool for innovation support service/advisory organisations. To do this, we first start by broadly exploring the content and structure of existing self-assessment tools present in the literature. It is with this focus that we offer a 4 months (40 hours per monath) HIWI job at our department:
Frame of HIWI activities:
- Carry out a literature review on content and design of Organisational Self-Assessment tools, especially in the frame of innovation support services/advisory service organisations (using available English and French literature) and,
- Finalise with a brief review report
- Support with the technical design of a (an online) self-assessment tool on support service/advisory service organisations
Key requirements:
- Bilingual student (French and English) or working knowledge of French
- Grounded in empirical social science methods
- Basic knowledge of computer programming, or good knowledge of excel will be a plus
