Jatropha curcas L. seeds contain up to 40 % viscous oil, which is considered as a primary energy source for households in tropical and subtropical countries, among others J. curcas is also found as an option to reduce deforestation and dependence on fossil fuels and to promote agricultural activities. Objective of this study was the investigation of temperature influence generated from mechanical crushing on J. curcas oil extraction efficiency and oil quality. Determination of optimal temperature for oil extraction and oil quality was possible by conducting several experiments with mechanical screw press (Komet D85-1G). The screw press was modified and sensors were installed for measuring parameters such as oil recovery, temperature, pressure, energy requirement, torque and angular velocity. As the oil extraction efficiency and oil quality is strongly influenced by temperature generated from mechanical crushing, chemical properties such as density, kinematic viscosity, cetane number, heating value, carbon residues, iodine number, total contamination, acid value, phosphor content, ash content, water content and fatty acid pattern were measured by using DIN – Norm and ISO – Standards. Regression models were computed via Origin Lab 8 software and temperature influence on oil chemical properties was determined.
