Abstract

Croton panamensis latex was investigated for its antibacterial, antifungal, antifeedant, nematicidal, and molluscicidal properties. The latex and exts. of different polarities showed activities against Pseudomonas fluorescens comparable to ampicillin-Na and chloramphenicol, resp., the di-Et ether ext. turned out to be nematicidal towards Meloidogyne incognica (80% Abbott at 500 ppm). High molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria glabrata was obsd. at 100 ppm with the latex and its water ext. (66% and 100% mortality, resp.). Chromatog. work up of the di-Et ether ext. yielded 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-benzoic acid (I), 2,5-dihydroxy-phenylethanol (II), phloroglucinol, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (+)-gallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin quercetin, and myricitrin. All compds. have not been described to occur in Croton panamensis so far. This is also the first report for the natural occurrence of compds. I and II.
