Abstract

For the last 20 years, aquaculture has been the fastest growing source of food and agricultural income, worldwide at around 11% per year. In Africa, aquaculture development has occurred only recently and has therefore only made a small contribution to economic development and food security. This book provides the reader with comprehensive information about the situation of fish farming in Africa and in more detail in Malawi. It sheds light on the situation of fish farming and the aquaculture development context in general, examines farmers’ perceptions and looks at the innovation itself. The objective of the study is to identify the driving and inhibiting forces in the decision-making process of farmers whether to adopt fish farming in earthen ponds or not. From there, the chances of diffusion can be estimated and consequences for promotion programs can be concluded.
