Abstract

Sixteen coumarins from Angelica archangelica (syn. Archangelica officinalis) were analyzed by means of HPLC-MS with atm. pressure chem. ionization (APCI) and subsequently isolated for spectroscopical identification including two-dimensional NMR expts. Furthermore, the isolated coumarins were tested for anti-inflammatory activity in terms of in vitro cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) inhibition. They were found to be not active in the COX-1 assay. Concerning 5-LO inhibition, osthol and oxypeucedanin hydrate isovalerate turned out to be active, whereas the other obsd. effects were only weak, not concn. dependent and possibly explainable by the calcium antagonistic properties of these coumarins.
