Abstract

Hexane extraction is the most efficient, economical, and attractive oil extraction method for oilseeds with serious environmental, safety and low product quality concerns. Aqueous enzymatic process (AEP) and matrix mechanical pressing (MP) are gaining importance as an environmentally-friendly, safe and cheap alternative for oil extraction without affecting the quality of the end products. Under optimized set of conditions, Jatropha kernel oil was extracted by AEP and MP. The quality parameters (i.e. density, refractive index, iodine value, saponification value, unsaponifiable matter, peroxide value, p-anisidine value, phosphorous and free fatty acid contents) of the enzyme extracted oil (EEO) and matrix mechanical pressed oil (MPO) were determined and compared with that of hexane extracted oil (HEO). Overall, the quality of EEO was superior in terms of FFA, color and phosphorous content as compared to MPO and HEO hence physical/chemical refining steps may be eliminated for EEO and it may be directly used for biodiesel production. On the other hand, MPO had lower phosphorous content as against the HEO. The protein extracted through AEP and matrix pressed residue could be a potential source for non-food applications such as production of adhesives, coatings and chemicals; or these could be used for feed application after removal of phorbol esters.
