Showers for Cyclists  [27.11.19]

The University of Hohenheim is working to make the campus even more bicycle-friendly: It can now set another checkmark on the to-do list for certification by the ADFC (Association of German Cyclists). The Hohenheim cycling community now has 47 showers with changing facilities at its disposal. The Hohenheim mobility manager hopes that this offer can be expanded step by step.

Arriving at the office or lecture hall drenched in sweat? Not exactly a pleasant idea for most people.

Since his appointment about a year ago, shower and changing facilities have therefore been a particular concern for the Hohenheim bicycle representative. "Perhaps this point could even be decisive for some people to swap their car for a bicycle on their way to the university," said Volker Schmid.

In fact, an inspection of the campus revealed a surprise: many of the buildings on the campus already have showers, but so far they have only been used by the respective facilities.

"Of course, not all of them are suitable for everyone to use," said Paul Weinmann from the Property and Construction Management Department. "Some buildings are not open to the public, e.g. laboratory areas, and some institutes are not continuously staffed. Nevertheless, we have been able to identify a number of showers that meet all the necessary requirements."

After the university had agreed in principle to bear the costs of the increased cleaning effort, it was vital to win over the respective facilities.

"We are now very happy that three departments have agreed to 'share' their showers. Together with the sports hall, whose showers and changing rooms can now also be used by cyclists, a total of 47 showers are now available at 5 locations. Of course we hope that we will be able to expand this offer step by step. It is important for us to create as decentral a service as possible," said Martin Kerner, mobility manager at Hohenheim.

The following showers can be used from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. by university members: campusplan

- Tulpenbau Fruwirthstr. 21 (Building 01.39, Room 117): 4 showers

- Sports hall Egilolfstr. 47: 31 showers

- Eco-building 2 (Building 02.26, rooms -110 and -111, ground floor): one shower per room

- Phytomedicine, Otto-Sanderstr. 5 (Building 03.21, room -124 and -126, lower floor): two showers per room
