Start-up assistance

Financial assistance for spin-off companies from the university

Funding program supports graduates and scientists in starting a business. Which program fits best depends on the idea and implementation plan.

The Innovation Greenhouse assists entrepreneurs in choosing the right program and filling out the application.

With the EXIST start-up scholarship from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), innovative, technology-focused or knowledge-based entrepreneurial projects are supported. In the start-up phase, entrepreneurs can receive a scholarship for one year to pay for their costs of living. Material costs and coaching are also subsidized.

Applications are submitted through the university.

The funding program EXIST Research transfer is aimed at scientists with a start-up project that first needs to be further developed before starting a business and is therefore risky. The start-up project must come out of outstanding scientific research and show a high degree of innovation.

Funding is provided in two phases:

In phase I the idea is to be further developed into a proof of concept. Funds are provided for the personnel costs for the team, material costs, and coaching for 18 months with the option for an extension. Applications are submitted through the university.

Phase II can only start after the company has been founded after phase I. A maximum of 75% of the costs (max € 180.000) can be provided if the company has procured its own funding from external investors. The funding period is 18 months. Applications are submitted by the newly founded company.

With the program Young Innovators, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) supports spin-offs by scientists from universities and research institutions, including those following other EXIST-funded projects.

Start-up projects that come out of scientific research activities are funded, e.g. based on inventions or technical or scientific expertise. Entrepreneurs are provided with a research associate position for one year with an option to extend. Material costs and coaching are also subsidized. Applications are submitted through the university.

With the startupbw consulting vouchers from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism,  entrepreneurs can receive individual advising.

Advising is done in two phases:

Phase A - Brief Consultation: An advising service first carries out the typical free initial advising to define the precise need for advising and, if applicable, to point out the appropriate individual advising services.

Phase B - Individual advising: The consulting vouchers can be used for up to 10 advising days for individual advising. Entrepreneurs pay a contribution for each of the days.
