Nutrient recovery from digestate (Bachelorthesis)

The State Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioenergy at the University of Hohenheim is looking for students for a Bachelor's thesis in the research project "NitroPhos 2 - Optimization of the process chain for the recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen from digestate" starting in August 2024.

Background

igestate from biogas plants is unevenly distributed in Germany and cannot be transported economically. It is therefore advantageous to isolate the nutrients from digestate. By recovering the fertilizers, nutrient cycles can be closed, mineral fertilizer imports (phosphate rock) can be avoided and energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. Nitrogen is present in the fermentation product mainly in the soluble form (ammonium nitrogen). By heating or raising the pH value, the soluble nitrogen can be converted into the gaseous form (ammonia) and thus separated from the fermentation product.

Goal of the research

As part of the project, a novel, energy-efficient disk reactor for the denitrification of liquid fermentation residues from biogas plants was developed and built in the prototype construction department at the University of Hohenheim. This is to be tested under various process conditions as part of the final thesis in order to determine the optimum parameters.

Tasks
·         Perform laboratory experiments in pressure-stable batch reactors.
·         Evaluation of the results

Requirements

·         Bachelor's degree in renewable raw materials and bioenergy, process engineering, environmental engineering, agricultural sciences or similar
·         Previous experience in laboratory work is advantageous.
·         Very good English or German language skills, both written and spoken.
·         Good computer skills, initiative, flexibility and ability to work in a team

The thesis can be combined with a Hiwi employment (25 h/month for 3 months).

Since the university would like to increase its proportion of female scientists, applications from women are particularly welcome. In case of equal suitability, severely disabled persons will be given preference.
