Higher Subject-Related Semesters

If you anticipate that coursework and examinations from your current degree program will be recognized, you can apply for a higher subject-related semester.

After receiving your formal application, the examination committee will decide on the recognition of credits and for which semester you can start. This also applies if you are coming from another university and applying for the same or a subject-related program of study.

You must apply online with our application portal.
No paper documents will be submitted to the University of Hohenheim.

When applying, please state that you are in at least the 2nd subject-related semester. Following the evaluation of the examination committee we will correct this if necessary.

Before you apply for a degree program, please read the information about the requirements, the selection criteria, and the required documents.
This will make the application process much easier for you and helps you to avoid mistakes and delays.

Application deadlines

There are no generally valid application deadlines. The deadlines for the individual degree programs can be found under “Application” in the degree program information or under the general information about applying.

Requirements

To be admitted to a higher subject-related semester, the admission requirements listed in the degree program’s admission regulations must be fulfilled.

All applicants who fulfill the criteria will be accepted and enrolled in their desired study program in a higher semester.

Applications in degree programs that have the same name or are identical

For applications in degree programs that have the same name or are identical, two ranking lists are created. The applicants are in both lists for their degree program.

1. Ranking list using the added ECTS from the recognized coursework and examinations

2. Ranking according to the degree to which the student is dependent on this location, in particular because of:

  • Severe disability (of the applicant) or
  • Care or support of a child, parent, or spouse, then on the basis of
  • Membership in an Olympic squad, team sports squad, perspective squad, supplementary squad, or junior squad 1 of a national specialist association of the German Olympic Sports Federation formed at the national level and ties to the Hohenheim study location due to justified circumstances

Changing degree programs

For people changing degree programs, a third ranking list is created.

3. Ranking list using the added ECTS from the recognized coursework and examinations

The free places usually cannot be determined until after the re-registration period is over.  That is why the notifications for the winter semester are usually not sent until September and those for the summer semester in March.

Coursework and examinations will usually be recognized  if they convey the same competences as the corresponding credits in Hohenheim. The subject representatives or examination committees will decide on the recognition of individual coursework and examinations.

In order to be admitted in a higher subject-related semester, courses and examinations from a previous degree program totaling at least one semester’s worth of credits (for being placed in the 2nd subject-related semester) have to be recognized. To be placed in the 3rd or higher subject-related semester, a sufficient number of credits must be recognized.

This also applies if you are changing from a program of study at another university to a degree program of the same name at the University of Hohenheim or changing between related degree programs within the University of Hohenheim.

Special regulation for changing between the Bachelor’s programs Biology, Nutritional Science, and Food Science and Biotechnology at the University of Hohenheim:
The examination regulations of these degree programs make it possible to change between the degree programs with all credits being recognized if all the work from the first year of studies have been completed.

Coursework and examinations done abroad  will be submitted to the respective examination committee together with a position given by the University of Hohenheim’s Office of International Affairs.

Only credits that have been completed, that is, passed, by the end of the application deadline can be recognized. It is not possible to submit examination results after the application deadline has passed!
