The University of Hohenheim mourns the loss of Professor Dr. Stephan Dabbert born 23 June 1958, deceased 1 October 2024 As a charismatic university president, Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert guided the fate of the University of Hohenheim from 2012 until his sudden death on October 1, 2024. Stephan Dabbert was born on 23 June 1958 in Braunschweig. After vocational training as a farmer, Dabbert studied Agricultural Science and Agricultural Economics at the University of Kiel and Pennsylvania State University. He completed his doctorate and habilitation at the University of Hohenheim. He headed the Institute of Socioeconomics at the Center for Agricultural Land and Land Use Research in Müncheberg from 1992 to 1994. In 1994 he was appointed as the chair of the Department of Production Theory and Resource Economics in Agriculture at the University of Hohenheim. Here he was Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences from 2000 to 2006, and President of the university starting in 2012. Professor Dabbert’s scientific work focused on the economics and politics of organic farming, the economic and agricultural policy evaluation of environmentally friendly land use methods, resource economics, and agricultural economic sector modelling within the framework of interdisciplinary landscape modelling. As President, he rendered great services to the further development and visibility of the University of Hohenheim. He was valued above all as an inspiring and motivating leader. During his time in office, the professors voted him the most popular university president in Baden-Württemberg seven times, and in 2016 he was even named University President of the Year nationwide. His sudden death leaves a painful gap. Our thoughts are now with his family and friends. We will always honor the memory of Prof. Dr. Dabbert.
