Universität Hohenheim in the top ten of the International Student Barometer [05.05.11]
78% of the international students recommend Hohenheim / top position in terms of research / place 9 in overall ranking
A good third of the international students would actively encourage others to apply to the Universität Hohenheim. Another 42% want to recommend the University on request. With this overall satisfaction at 78%, Hohenheim is ranked 9th among the German universities that participated in the 2010 wave of the International Student Barometer (ISB). In total, 49 universities were evaluated in the study, which is supported by the German Rektors’ Conference and the DAAD, to get feedback from their international guests. From the perspective of the international students, a special plus of Hohenheim is the strong involvement of master’s students into actual research projects. Here, the Universität Hohenheim is number one in Germany.
Also the support structures right after the arrival are evaluated in a very positive way: The Universität Hohenheim offers, for instance, a buddy service organized by the International Student Organization (ISO). ISO picks up the newly arrived students from the airport, helps them to find an accommodation and assists with administrative formalities. Consequently, Hohenheim’s arrival support services achieved the 3rd place in Germany.
Particularly striking: An unusually high percentage of students have decided to study in Germany specifically because of Hohenheim’s good reputation: In total, 63% of the international students of the Universität Hohenheim said that this was the most important factor. In Germany, by comparison, only 55% of the international students questioned gave this as a reason for their decision of where to study.
Weaknesses of Hohenheim are, according to its international students, the catering situation on campus and accommodation and living costs in Stuttgart could also be better. They also ask for a more feedback regarding their academic performance.
Overall, 67% of the international students in Hohenheim participated in the survey. This is an unusually high response rate: At other universities, by comparison, only 27% of the international students answered the ISB questions on average.
Background information on the International Student Barometer (ISB)
The ISB is not yet another higher eduation institutions’ ranking, but a benchmarking study by i-graduate with feedback from international students at universities worldwide. The survey tracks the decision-making of international students on where to study. Additionally, it includes questions on perceptions and experiences of undergraduate, graduate and Phd students concerning the areas of learning, living, support and arrival. In Germany, it is up to each university to decide if they participate in the ISB. More than 90 German universities have participated in the study since 2009. The ISB is supported by the German Rector's Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under GATE Germany.
