The Universität Hohenheim assumes pole position in Agricultural Science [02.12.07]
Top in terms of outside funding and a front-runner in terms of DFG projects and international networking
According to the German Research Association (DFG) Funding Ranking, the Universität Hohenheim has undertaken the highest number of DFG research projects in Agricultural Science, attracts the highest number of top international academics and is one of the leading German universities in terms of attracting outside funding. The Universität Hohenheim is awaiting with anticipation the report from the Science Council, in which the strategy and future potential of Germany’s Agricultural Science institutions will be put under the microscope.The German Research Association’s (DFG’s) funding figures are very reassuring for us, explains Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Liebig, the Rector of the Universität Hohenheim. Retrospectively analysing the period from 2002 to 2004, the German Research Association’s statistics detail the total of all third-party funding, a University’s scientific expertise, its attractiveness to foreign students and researchers and the number of DFG research projects undertaken in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry, and is a glowing accolade for the Universität Hohenheim.“
It is of even greater importance, however, that we look towards the future, urged Prof. Dr. Liebig, contemplating the comprehensive report by the Science Council on Agricultural Science in Germany that is expected at the start of November. In addition to providing statistical facts and figures, it will also put the strategy and future potential of all agricultural universities under the microscope and comment on this. "For us, as a small, highly specialised university, this is the ultimate “Initiative for Excellence” from the professionals", comments Prof. Dr. Liebig.
The Results
Third-party funding: During the period from 2004 to 2006 the University received outside funding of around 10.0 millions euros and is thus only fractionally behind the first-placed University of Gießen with 10.6 million euros. The University of Göttingen comes in third placed with funding of 8.9 million euros.
Internationality: According to the German Research Association’s Funding Ranking, the Universität Hohenheim is the university that is most attractive to international students and researchers and, in the period from 2004 to 2006, attracted 14 international fellows from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and 43 fellows from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Research work: By participating in five German Research Association projects, the Universität Hohenheim has undertaken the highest number of research projects, followed closely by the universities of Gießen and Göttingen and the TU Munich.
Scientific and academic expertise: In the period from 2002 to 2004, the University produced a total of 27.6 papers and thus is part of the German triumvirate formed with the University of Göttingen (29.8 papers) and the TU Munich (27.9 papers)
