Climate Change:
Increasing CO2 Concentration Lowers Quality of Wheat [10.03.16]
University of Hohenheim simulates effects of climate in the year 2050 / protein and nutrient content of crops sink / workshop report
Poor baking characteristics, fewer nutrients, danger of malnutrition: Wheat seems to be headed towards this in the future. The causes are climate change and the growing amount of CO2 in the atmosphere - this was the alarming result found by scientists at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. The researchers under the direction of Prof. Dr. Andreas Fangmeier obtained their previous results in the so-called climate chambers: In these, they simulated the climate conditions in 30 years and examined how they affect yield and quality of wheat as a model plant. Currently, the findings are being refined outdoors. With over 300,000 euros in funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the project is one of the research concentrations at the University of Hohenheim.
