Once again top spot in the DAAD funding ranking [08.08.23]
In 2022, the University of Hohenheim received 365 euros in funding per student from the DAAD: No. 3 in Baden-Württemberg / more than 3 million euros for scholarships and international projects
Now that the Corona pandemic has subsided, there is new momentum in the international collaborations of the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart: The interest of prospective students from all over the world continues unabated, the desire among German students to spend time abroad is growing once again, and numerous international programs for researchers are being successfully extended. The University of Hohenheim received just over 3.0 million euros for internationalization projects and scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 2022. That was shown in its current funding list. In this list, the DAAD shows which universities qualified for the largest amounts of funding with their activities. Since 2015, Hohenheim has been one of the top five universities in Baden-Württemberg. Once again this year, the university can be pleased with a top ranking in funding amounts per student: With a sum of 365 euros in 2022, it ranked 3rd in Baden-Württemberg and 20th in Germany.
In the DAAD's overall funding atlas, the University of Hohenheim is thus among the top 3 universities in the state for the ninth time in a row. "For a relatively small university like Hohenheim, this is remarkable," said Franziska Schenk, director of the university's Office of International Affairs.
"The University of Hohenheim uses the DAAD funding to advance its internationalization in a targeted manner," stated Prof. Dr. Andreas Pyka, Vice President for International Affairs. We attach great importance to supporting students and lecturers in international projects and establishing and maintaining long-term partnerships. The consistently high level of funding in programs and projects confirms that we are on the right track."
New momentum for international cooperation
“Now that the Covid pandemic has subsided, we can once again cultivate collaboration and networks through visits and travel, build on old contacts and launch new initiatives,” he said.
In 2022, for example, the University of Hohenheim had signed agreements for research cooperation with a total of 302 universities worldwide. 279 students took advantage of the opportunity for a semester abroad at one of nearly 160 partner universities in more than 40 countries for a double Master's program or for an internship abroad. 187 exchange students came to Hohenheim as guests in 2022. International students made up 15 percent of the student body.
With regard to funding for scholarships and activities abroad, there is an encouraging development: "For the upcoming academic year 2023/24, we have received another increase in funding commitments for the Erasmus+ program," said Franziska Schenk.
Internationalization projects with the highest funding volume in 2022
Exchange program Erasmus+:
The Erasmus+ mobility program with European partner countries and selected countries outside Europe increased by 170,000 euros in 2022. The DAAD estimates around 823,000 euros for Erasmus+ in the current funding ranking. As a result, an increasing number of students left Hohenheim to study abroad in Europe. 199 decided to spend time at one of the partner universities in Europe. The number of students from abroad who chose to come study at Hohenheim also increased to 148.
Bilateral SDG Graduate School CLIFOOD
At the beginning of 2021, the DAAD-funded German-Ethiopian Research Training Group "Climate Change Effects on Food Security" (CLIFOOD) of the Universities of Hohenheim and Hawassa in Ethiopia entered a five-year extension period, funded with 2.25 million euros from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). 420,000 euros of this was allocated to 2022.
The main objective of the project, which started in 2016, is to train African PhD students and postdocs to address the threats of climate change to food security in the East African region, thus contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
DAAD Agri Alumni Network
Supporting the paradigm shift in agricultural systems towards sustainable land use in Africa is the goal of the DAAD Agri Alumni Network. Together with the partner university in Nairobi, a network of graduates of the University of Hohenheim and the German Institute of Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics and Subtropics (DITSL) is being set up to address current agricultural science issues relating to food security and climate and environmental protection. In total, more than 80 alumni benefit directly from the measures in Kenya and Germany, which the DAAD supports with 158,000 euros.
Development-Related Post-Graduate Degree Programs (EPOS)
The DAAD is funding two degree programs at the University of Hohenheim with around 130,000 euros through the EPOS program: the international doctoral program IPPAE and the AgEcon program. Within the framework of EPOS, participants from developing and emerging countries receive individual scholarships for development-related postgraduate studies at German universities.
International doctorate program IPPAE
The "International PhD Program in Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems" (IPPAE) will also be funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for another eight years after a very successful record so far. The two universities of Giessen and Hohenheim will each receive more than two million euros for this from 2022 to 2030. In addition, around 480,000 euros are allocated for supervisory tasks.
The joint program between the two universities enables professionals and leaders from developing and emerging countries to better realize the potential of the agricultural sector for poverty alleviation and food security, achieve more sustainable use of natural resources, and tap into new opportunities arising from the bioeconomy.
AgEcon program
The Master's degree program in Agricultural Economics at the University of Hohenheim trains decision-makers for global agricultural economics and agricultural policy. In this English-language and international Master's program, economic growth, sustainability, and social justice are central topics, especially in an international and development-related context. The DAAD awards full scholarships for this degree program to outstanding applicants from developing countries.
Turkish-German University
The Turkish-German University (TDU) in Istanbul is a Turkish state institution established in 2013 on the basis of a German-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. Since 2015, the University of Hohenheim has been a member of the consortium "Turkish-German University" (K-TDU) e.V. It is in charge of establishing an economics Bachelor's program, which started in September 2018 with 16 students. In the meantime, the third cohort has already begun their studies in economics at the TDU. In 2022, the DAAD supported the establishment of the program with around 125,000 euros.
DAAD Prize
Every year, the DAAD awards 1,000 euros to exceptionally committed and academically outstanding foreign students nationwide. With this award, the DAAD wants to help put faces to the large numbers of international students at German universities and connect them with stories.
At the University of Hohenheim, this year's special achievement award goes to Bahar Abrishamchi from Iran. She is enrolled in the Master's program in Food Biotechnology and stood out not only for her very good performance in her studies, but also for her outstanding commitment in the laboratory and in assisting foreign guests during the international conference Biosurfactants|2022.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organization for academic exchange. It is supported by German universities and students. Since 2000, the DAAD has provided funding atlases for its member universities. The atlas contains information on individual funding as well as program and project funding.
The DAAD lists the 100 universities with the highest amount of funding (in relation to the total number of all students at the university).
