University of Hohenheim condemns attacks [10.10.23]
University management reiterates statements of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and condemns attacks from Hamas and Hezbollah / Concern for Israeli university partners
The management of the University of Hohenheim is shocked by the attacks against Israel. "Terror against civilians cannot be justified by anything," emphasized Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert, President of the University of Hohenheim. "For decades, we have maintained active student exchanges and research collaboration with Israel. Now we are greatly concerned for the people there, especially at our partner universities." The German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) have also already expressed their solidarity with the Israeli partners.
The University of Hohenheim stands in solidarity with the Israelis and the university partners there, stated the Vice President for International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pyka. "After this act of terror, we empathize with the victims and their families," the President said. "This has led to an escalation that will cause more innocent civilians to suffer. Our thoughts are also with them. As a university, we advocate fundamental values such as the equality of all people and respect for human dignity regardless of religion or ethnicity. This means that we also stand up for all people living together in peace."
Three young people from Israel are currently studying at the University of Hohenheim. For student exchange, the University of Hohenheim offers bilateral programs with Reichman University in Herzliya and Jerusalem Hebrew University. The latter is also a non-European partner of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS). The network is made up of joint study programs and intensive exchange of students and lecturers. Next November, the annual ELLS conference will take place in Hohenheim and participants from Israel are expected.
Two outgoings were in the starting blocks for a study visit to Israel in the winter semester, but now had to cancel their departure due to the situation. The German Foreign Office strongly advises against traveling to Israel.
The University of Hohenheim has also been cooperating with Hebrew University in research for decades. Since 1987, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences has had a research program with the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment in Rehovot that promotes early career researchers from both countries. As part of the interdisciplinary InBenBio project, in which the University of Hohenheim is working together with other partners, a delegation trip to Tel Aviv with industry representatives was planned for the end of October. This trip was also cancelled for the time being due to the current situation.
