    Founding Day 20 November

“Besides lessons,” it was to “[...] conduct experiments, evaluate others’ experiences [and] solve important questions [...] with an unprejudiced, large-scale comparisons over several years, spreading and publicizing all progress confirmed by this work (...)”. Slightly generalized, that was the royal founding charge upon which the later University of Hohenheim started its work on 20 November 1818.

Originally focused solely on agriculture, the then “Agricultural Experimental and Teaching Institute Hohenheim” was to contribute to preventing famines for all time. For 200 years, the University of Hohenheim has remained true to its original mission - finding solutions for urgent human issues.

Since then, however, the University of Hohenheim has expanded its scientific approach. Besides its status and Germany’s no. 1 in agricultural sciences, today the University also houses nutrition and food sciences, natural sciences such as biology and earth system sciences, and business, economics, social, and communication sciences.

In this work, it is active globally. That is reason enough celebrate with friends from all over the world.

    Noon, Mensa:
    Cutting the 100 kg cake

The University of Hohenheim’s birthday will start with a present: 12 birthday cakes weighing a total of 100 kg have been donated by the Student Services Tübingen-Hohenheim for the celebration.

At noon, Oliver Schill, Managing Director of Student Services, and Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert, President of the University of Hohenheim, will cut the culinary piece of art in the Mensa. All University members are invited.

    5:00 p.m., Otto Rettenmaier Audimax:
Ceremonial act with Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann, Lord Mayor Fritz Kuhn, StZ Editor-in-Chief Joachim Dorfs

The guests of honor at the ceremonial act can expect a special opening speech at 5 p.m. in the Otto Rettenmaier Audimax by Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann. After all, the Hohenheim alumnus’ political beginnings are closely tied to his time as a student at the University of Hohenheim.

Lord Mayor of the City of Stuttgart, Fritz Kuhn, will also greet the guests. With the topic “Digitalization of the University,” Joachim Dorfs, Editor-in-Chief of the Stuttgarter Zeitung will lead a discussion round. Another highlight is a performance by students at the renowned John Cranko School of Ballet.

    6:45 p.m., Hohenheim Palace:
Reception for Guests of Honor with Topic Rooms and Transcontinental Culinary Delights

On a path of light designed by light artist Kurt Laurenz Teinert, guests of honor will then walk to the reception in Hohenheim Palace.

There, the University of Hohenheim will present its global work: Four continent rooms will present information on the University of Hohenheim’s connections and one scientific project each in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. Sensory impressions will be provided by the floral decorations from the Florist Meisterschule in Hohenheim and the continent’s culinary specialties presented by Student Services Tübingen-Hohenheim.

The anniversary wine, which was aged in an oak barrel by the University’s own research winery, will also be served. In addition, guests can try the anniversary bread, which University of Hohenheim food scientists developed together with the Bäckerei Treiber. Those who enjoy coffee can enjoy the first climate-neutral coffee from Hochland, which the University of Hohenheim investigated in a research project.

In all, the University of Hohenheim is expecting around 500 guests of honor and friends at its ceremonial act and reception. They also include around 25 international cooperation partners from around the world (Belgium, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Italy, Japan, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and the USA). Representatives will attend from all strategic networks that the University of Hohenheim maintains with the best scientists in the respective fields, e.g. on the topic of Bioeconomy (“BECY” network), Innovation (“INEF” network), Life Sciences (“ELLS” network), and Management (“HERMES”).

The University of Hohenheim will greets its international guests of honor on the day before the ceremonial act with the Partner Universities’ Anniversary Program. High-ranking representatives from partner universities will meet to have discussions and to enjoy a cultural visiting program. The highlight will be a fireplace discussion with the Secretary General of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Dr. Dorothea Rüland, on the topic “Internationalization and Digitalization.”

Parallel program in the Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer: Cultural and Anniversary Impressions

At the same time as the ceremonial act for guests of honor, the student AStA cultural group will organize another celebration in the Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer. With the motto “Beer’n’Bites,” starting at 7 p.m. attendees can try international beers and watch the best videos of the anniversary year.

Around 10:30 p.m., President Prof. Dr. Dabbert has announced that he will come and promised a birthday surprise for the guests.

BACKGROUND: 200 Years University of Hohenheim

With the explosive power of 170,000 Hiroshima bombs, the volcano Tambora in Indonesia erupted on 10 April 1815. Tons of ash and dust particles darkened the sky around the world. It became so dark that there was no summer in 1816. Harvests went bad and famines spread. As a key to survival, King William of Württemberg and Queen Catherine invested in education and research: On 20 November 1818, they founded the “Agricultural Teaching, Experimental and Model Institute Hohenheim” - the predecessor of today’s University.

200 years later, the University of Hohenheim is still following the charge given to it at its founding: using research and teaching to help face global challenges. In the anniversary year 2018, it celebrated its founding with more than 180 events. Topics such as nutrition and health, climate, water and ecosystems, social inequality, or bioeconomy played just as big of a role as the cultural aspects of campus life. The program and information can be found on the University homepage, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter under www.uni-hohenheim.de/en/anniversary-2018 and #hohenheim200.
