Starting signal for Germany’s first large biogas plant for research purposes: a big ceremony with political representation, guided visits, presentation of research projects and background music accompanies the start of the innovative research facility at the Universität Hohenheim after a two-year construction period.

Universität Hohenheim opens Germany’s first biogas research plant

Scientific tests will now identify the correct mixture from manure, new energy plants and adjusted high-tech processes to increase the efficiency of gas production and utilization by 50 per cent. Since more efficiency means less agricultural crop land, the results could contribute to reducing the competition between energy plants and foodstuff production on the fields of a starving world.

As the heart of the Baden-Württemberg bio-energy research platform, the plant serves as a point of crystallisation for all research activities relating to bio-energy. The construction costs amount to approximately 2.5 million Euros. The majority of this was financed by the Universität Hohenheim, particularly through the Ellrichshausen Foundation and sponsorship mainly from EnBW and Fair Energy. The Baden-Württemberg Department of Nutrition and Rural Space (MLR) is funding the initial research projects as part of the IV future offensive.
