Guest House & Welcome Center: University starts up new service for international guest scientists.

The service begins weeks before departure: The new welcome center of the University of Hohenheim takes care of accomodation, childcare, visa, tax forms and getting you started in Stuttgart all in advance. The new guest house of the University will open on May 4th, providing lodging for visiting scientists and a stone's throw from the campus. With all the amenities, from towels to bedclothes and Internet access. Read the full article (in German).

Food, Farming, Consumer Protection: Prof. Dr. Grethe head of the agricultural policy advisory committee to the federal ministry

Prof. Dr. Harald Grethe, chair of the Agricultural and Food Policy Department has been elected director of the scientific advisory committee of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Another new addition to the committee is Prof. Dr. Regina Birner, chair of the department of Social and Institutional Change in Agricultural Development at the University of Hohenheim. From April 23rd, 2012

Effective immediately: Rector's Office determines new regulations regarding extra pay allowance for professors.

From now on, the University of Hohenheim will only provide bonus payments to professors for a limited time period. The reason for this is that the University has exceeded the budget for professors' salaries numerous times. The new rules will not affect agreements already in place. "All legal obligations regarding professors' salaries will be met", according to Rector Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert. Read the full article (in German).

In Cell Reports: The craving for assymetry is nearly as old as life itself.

Lopsided lucky: The veering away from the axis of reflection is what made higher forms of life, humans included, possible in the first place. But even higher life forms begin with a spherically-shaped, symmetrical cell. Using vertebrates, zoologists at the University of Hohenheim  are currently demonstrating that in the history of evolution, this successful recipe has only been applied one single time.
