University of Hohenheim in Top Position for Agricultural Engineering  [16.03.21]

Students have chosen: 1st place for University of Hohenheim for "Best Teaching in Agricultural Engineering" / 83 percent would recommend their university to others

Those who want to specialize in agricultural engineering during their studies are in particularly good hands at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart: Students voted it into first place for best teaching in agricultural technology. That is the result of the agricultural university ranking of the trade journal top agrar. Students at 27 universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland were surveyed. More than 4,000 students participated in the survey, 197 of them from Hohenheim. The students had chosen to study at the University of Hohenheim primarily because of its good reputation, the attractiveness of the courses offered, and its research strength.


Crop production, animal production, agricultural economics, and agricultural engineering: Evaluated by German school grades, the University of Hohenheim is above the average of all universities in all areas. In the field of agricultural engineering, the University of Hohenheim came in first place among all universities with a grade of 1.56 (on a German scale of 1-6 with 1 being the best grade): This puts it ahead of Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences (1.70) and Neubrandenburg University (1.75).

The Hohenheim students did not hide their satisfaction: 83% of them would recommend their university to others - at other universities, only 76% would do so.

Within the framework of the digital EuroTier, top agrar and Karrero recently present the awards to the winning universities. Every two years, the trade journal and its job portal survey students about studying agriculture in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In the last ranking in 2018, the University of Hohenheim came in second place in the field of agricultural engineering.


Particularly attractive: Electives and specializations

Agricultural studies in Hohenheim received the best grades for the range of electives (1.45) and the student council (1.44). Respondents rated their satisfaction with online lectures at 1.75, and the range of required courses at 1.79.

In their own choice of study location, 86% of students cited the good reputation of the University of Hohenheim as a reason for their decision. For 53%, the attractiveness of the range of courses was important, and 44% were impressed with Hohenheim’s specializations.

These include topics such as global food security, climate change and resource scarcity, or bioenergy and bio-based value chains. In addition, the University of Hohenheim’s unique feature came into play: The focus on bioeconomy and the international Master's degree program in Bioeconomy. In both, agricultural science areas cooperate with economics and natural sciences as well as food and nutrition sciences - a unique offer nationwide.


Even Bachelor’s students benefit from Germany's No. 1 in agricultural research

The University of Hohenheim also occupies a top position in agricultural research as Germany's No. 1: This is confirmed by the National Taiwan University Ranking, the Best Global Universities Ranking, and the QS World University Ranking. In terms of agricultural research, the University of Hohenheim was ranked 6th, 7th, or 8th in Europe, depending on the ranking. Internationally, it ranks 22nd, 28th, or 16th, depending on the ranking.

This scientific orientation is noticeable in the degree programs: 81% of students feel well prepared for a career in science and research. This is no coincidence: Even in the Bachelor's program, students have the opportunity to develop and carry out their own research projects as part of the Humboldt reloaded program. The university received the Ars legendi award, the nation's highest award for excellent teaching, for the program in 2014.
