top agrar university ranking:
University of Hohenheim tops the list of universities three times  [09.12.24]

First place among universities for teaching crop sciences, animal science and agricultural technology / 96 percent recommend their university to other people – more than at any other university

Satisfied agricultural students: In the ninth agricultural university ranking published by the scientific journal top agrar, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart was once again voted first among universities in three areas: best teaching in crop production, animal production and agricultural technology. 96 percent of students – more than at any other university listed – would recommend their university to other people. The students decided to study at the University of Hohenheim primarily because of its excellent reputation and the attractiveness of the courses on offer.

Best teaching in the fields of crop sciences (1.54), animal science (1.54) and agricultural technology 1.60): Rated using the German school grading system (1 being the best and 6 the worst), the University of Hohenheim has the edge on other universities in three areas.

According to top agrar, the participants in the field of crop sciences “particularly praised the very in-depth teaching of the basic subjects.” Hohenheim also scored points for its “comprehensive lectures and good knowledge transfer,” wrote the journal in its 12/2024 issue. The University of Hohenheim also fared well in the fields of agricultural economics and organic farming, with scores of 1.86 and 1.88 respectively.

96 percent of students recommend their university to other people

The Hohenheim students did not hide their satisfaction: 96 percent of them would recommend their university to other people – more than at any other university.

Students at universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland took part in the ranking survey. Around 3,800 students from 33 universities took part, 335 of them from Hohenheim. The award ceremony organized by top agrar and Karrero for the winning universities was held recently at EuroTier 2024. Every two years, the scientific journal and its job portal conduct a survey of students about their agricultural studies.

Particularly attractive: Electives, range of courses and specializations

The range of elective subjects (1.38) and the work of the student representatives for the departments (1.47) were particularly well received by students studying agriculture in Hohenheim. When choosing their study location, 82 percent of students cited the University of Hohenheim's excellent reputation as the reason for their choice. For 41 percent, the attractiveness of the range of courses on offer was important and for 38 percent the Hohenheim specializations.

These include topics such as sustainability, global food security, climate change and resource scarcity or bioenergy and bio-based value chains. In addition, the University of Hohenheim has a unique selling point: the leading topic of bioeconomy. In this context, agricultural sciences cooperate with business and economic sciences, natural sciences, food and nutritional sciences – a unique offering in Germany.

Students appreciate both the high practical relevance and the scientific orientation

Students rate the support they receive during their studies as above average at 1.76. The agricultural experimental station, used to carry out research projects, is also well received by the students. They awarded a score of 1.44 to the experimental facilities at the University of Hohenheim.

The high level of practical relevance is also important: Students rate this as above average for their professors and for practical elements, i.e. excursions, workshops, tutorials or lectures by visiting lecturers.

The scientific orientation of the degree courses in Hohenheim is also worth mentioning: 73 percent of students feel they are well prepared for a career in science and research. This is no coincidence: As part of the Humboldt Reloaded program, students have the opportunity to carry out their own research projects already during their Bachelor's degree. In 2014, the university received the Ars legendi Prize for Humboldt Reloaded, Germany's highest award for excellence in teaching.
