THE 2021 Ranking in Life Sciences:
University of Hohenheim still among the best 250 worldwide  [05.11.20]

Placement in Ranking Group #201-250 for Agricultural Science and Biology in the Ranking by Subject / The University of Hohenheim is also among the top 20 percent in the overall ranking

In the area of Life Sciences, the University once again made it into the top 250 universities in the world in the new THE Ranking by Subject of the magazine "Times Higher Education" (THE). With the group placement #201-250, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart is in the top third of the 821 life sciences universities ranked. It was thus able to maintain its position despite the increasing number of participating universities worldwide. According to the THE Ranking, the life sciences include agricultural sciences, biology, veterinary medicine, and sports science. The University of Hohenheim is also in the top 20 percent of the THE World University Ranking of over 1,500 universities worldwide.


The ranking strengthens an area that has also distinguished itself in other rankings for years: Agricultural Sciences and Food Sciences have been placed no. 1 in Germany and among the best in Europe and the world by several international ranking systems, including the Best Global Universities Ranking by the magazine U.S. News & World Report, the QS World University Ranking, and the NTU Ranking by the National Taiwan University.

The University of Hohenheim was also able to score points in the overall ranking in THE World University Ranking 2021 this year: Among over 1,500 ranked universities, the university made it into the group of the best 201-250 universities, i.e. into the top fifth.

The leading position of agricultural research at the University of Hohenheim in Germany has recently been confirmed by all the well-known international rankings:

  • The current Best Global Universities Ranking 2021 places the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food and nutrition science 1st in Germany, 7th in Europe, and 28th in the world. The subject ranking of the U.S. News & World Report magazine is based on the analysis of Clarivate Analytics InCites and takes into account research performance and international reputation.   • The renowned research ranking of the National Taiwan University (NTU Ranking) listed the university as no. 1 in Germany, no. 6 in Europe, and no. 22 in the world. Each year, the NTU evaluates all international scientific publications for the globally respected ranking, assessing their number and quality. The latest issue was published in October 2020.   • The influential QS World University Ranking by Subject lists the University of Hohenheim’s agricultural research including food science 1st in Germany, 8th in Europe, and 16th worldwide. The analysis by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a British education provider, annually ranks the best universities primarily by research strength and examines factors such as academic reputation, publications, and citations of individual publications. BACKGROUND: Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject

The Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject covers 895 life sciences universities worldwide. The field of life sciences includes agriculture and forestry, biology, veterinary medicine, and sports science. Various areas are included in the evaluation: Teaching (27.5%), research (27.5%), scientific citations (35%), international orientation (7.5%), and third-party funding from industry (2.5%). Only universities with at least 500 publications in the respective subject area in the last five years are considered in the ranking by subject. In addition, at least 5% or at least 50 persons from the scientific staff must be active in the field of life sciences.
