Business & Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hohenheim Move Up into Top Segment  [15.11.22]

One of the world’s best 250 universities for business & economics and social sciences / University of Hohenheim among top 14 percent in global overall ranking

It is small, highly specialized, and can hold its own against large full universities: For business and economics as well as social sciences, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart with its Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences is among the world’s top 250 universities. This is according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, published on October 25, 2022. With a group ranking of #201-250 in both fields, the University of Hohenheim is in the top 30 percent of the 870 (business and economics) and 941 (social sciences) ranked universities. In Germany, it holds joint 10th place for business and economics, and joint 14th for social sciences. The University of Hohenheim landed in the #201-250 group of 1,799 ranked universities worldwide – placing it in the top 14 percent – in the recently published THE World University Rankings. The business and economics subject ranking applies to the business administration institutes (Marketing and Management, Interorganizational Management and Performance, Financial Management, Health Care and Public Management), the Institute of Education, Work and Society, and the Institute of Economics. The social sciences subject ranking relates mainly to the Institute of Education, Work and Society as well as Communication Science. In particular, the high number of academic citations contributed to the good scores in both rankings. This illustrates that the faculty’s research results are highly relevant.

The main focuses of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences in research and teaching include digital transformation and change, sustainable economy and consumption, and inequality and diversity. In teaching, it also scores highly for its international dual and triple degree programs, opportunities to conduct research at an early stage, and close links to business and industry.


BACKGROUND: Times Higher Education Rankings by Subject

The 2023 Times Higher Education Rankings by Subject cover 870 universities worldwide in the business and economics field. This comprises the subjects of business and management, accounting and finance, and economics and econometrics. Various areas are included in the evaluation: teaching (30.9%), research (32.6%), academic citations (25%), international outlook (9%), and industry income (2.5%). Only universities with at least 1,000 publications in the business and economics subject area in the last five years are considered in the ranking by subject. In addition, at least 5 percent or at least 50 members of academic staff must be active in the discipline of business and economics.

In social sciences, the ranking covers 941 universities worldwide and comprises the subjects of communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology, and geography. The weighting of the various criteria is slightly different than for business and economics: teaching (32.4%), research (32.6%), academic citations (25%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). Only universities with at least 1,000 publications in the social sciences subject area in the last five years are considered. In addition, at least 4 percent or at least 40 members of academic staff must be active in the social sciences discipline.
