The term alumnus (m, plural: alumni) or alumna (f, plural: alumnae) comes from Latin and means “pupil," literally also "the nourished one." The word comes from the Latin verb “alere," which means "to nourish". Alumni/alumnae originally referred to students of a boarding school, known as an alumnat. Nowadays, alumni/alumnae are those who have graduated from a university.
The University of Hohenheim understands alumni to be all former members of the university, i.e. everyone who has ever studied, researched, taught, or worked here. This definition thus includes both German and international students and exchange students, as well as (visiting) scientists and also former employees of the University of Hohenheim.
