German households generate large quantities of organic waste and wastewater every day. For the shift to a more sustainable economy and lifestyle, we need new ideas for dealing with waste materials. Scientists are developing ideas and innovations to close regional nutrient cycles and make sustainable use of existing resources.

In the joint project Rural Urban Nutrient Partnership (RUN), specialists are pursuing the vision of a recycling plant in which biowaste and domestic wastewater are converted into fertilizer, raw materials for bioplastics and plant charcoal, which in turn can be used in agriculture. Construction of a pilot reclamation facility in a real city neighborhood is currently in the planning stages.

In the future, innovations such as these could provide a viable alternative supplement to sewage treatment and composting plants that is accepted by the public, or complement conventional fertilizers.

How can such a concept be put into practice? How do farmers, consumers, and citizens rate such a solution? Which challenges would this solve, where are there still stumbling blocks?
