Conceptual design of a baffle plate for use in a manure biogas plant

Background: Biogas plants play an important role in the production of renewable energy. Efficient and uniform feeding of the plants with substrates such as liquid manure is crucial for maximising the gas yield and minimising operational disruptions. An innovative baffle plate can play an important role here by optimising the distribution of the slurry and thus increasing the efficiency of the plant. Objective: The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to develop and conceptualise a baffle plate that is specially designed for feeding liquid manure into a biogas plant. The focus is on the mechanical and functional design of the baffle plate and on optimising the distribution mechanisms.

Bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences, environmental engineering, renewable raw materials and bioenergy, process engineering and other related subjects

Knowledge of CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD)

Independent and structured way of working

The thesis can be combined with a student assistant position (25 h/month for 3 months).

Tasks:

Literature research & requirements analysis:

- Analysing existing feeding systems and their weak points.

- Analysing the requirements for an impact plate in a biogas plant.

- Determination of the specific requirements for the baffle plate, in particular with regard to the properties of the slurry and the operating conditions in biogas plants.

Conceptualisation & design:

- Development of various concept designs for the baffle plate.

- Evaluation of the designs in terms of their efficiency and feasibility

- Detailed elaboration of the preferred concept using CAD software

- Determination of materials and manufacturing techniques.

Prototype construction & optimisation:

Production of a prototype of the baffle plate (in-house 3D printer)

- Carrying out tests to check the practical suitability & optimisation of the design

Preparation of the bachelor thesis & defence:

- Comprehensive written documentation of the work steps, results and findings

- Preparation of a presentation for the defence of the thesis.
