(+)-, or (-)-pinoresinol: that is the question.
Which of the two enantiomeric lignans is formed during laccase-catalyzed phenol coupling of (E)-coniferyl alcohol depends on the Dirigent Protein: In presence of AtDIR6, the first Enantiocomplementary Dirigent Protein, (-)-pinoresinol is formed with an ee-value of 78%; FiDIR1 results in the preferential formation of (+)-pinoresinol, while only the racemate is found when Dirigent Proteins are absent
