Requests for special consideration in degree programs with a limited number of places

Special application requirements and procedures

During your online application, you can submit requests for special consideration in order to receive preferential treatment in the allocation of study places for programs with a limited number of places. A request for special consideration can only be successful if the respective requirements are met. Even if you are applying for a second degree at a level for which you already have a degree (for example a Bachelor’s program when you already have a Bachelor’s degree), there are specifics to the application process.

On this page you will find all the necessary information about the requirements and documents needed. If you have any questions, you can contact the Student Counselling Center (ZSB).

Second degree at a level for which a degree has already been obtained

You apply for a “second degree program” if you have already successfully completed an undergraduate degree program (e.g. Bachelor's degree) at a German university and would like to follow up with a second Bachelor's degree program with a limited number of places. A postgraduate program, especially with the intended degree of “Master," is not considered a second degree in this sense.

2% of the study places in degree programs with a limited number of places are awarded to applicants who are applying for a second degree.

In general, up to three applications can be submitted for studying at the University of Hohenheim. However, those applying for a second degree may only submit one application!

The online application is analogous to an application to the first degree program. Information about the second degree is requested in the application process, and proof can be uploaded as files.

You need to upload the following documents:

  • Final degree certificate of the first degree program with average grade
  • Detailed justification for the wanting to complete the second degree

Tuition fees are charged for second degree studies in Baden-Württemberg.

Hardship application

5% of the study places in degree programs with a limited number of places are awarded to applicants for whom non-admission to the program would mean exceptional hardship. Admission under the hardship quota is granted if special health, social, or family circumstances make it imperative that the student begin his or her studies immediately. The reasons must be so serious that a delay of even one semester is unreasonable.

If health circumstances are given as the reason, a specialist medical statement must adequately comment on the applicant’s health. The statement should contain information about the origin, severity, course, and treatment options of the disease as well as a prognosis about the further course of the disease. It should be comprehensible even for a medical layperson.

As part of the online application for Bachelor's programs with a limited number of places, you can submit a hardship application and upload the required proof. No paper documents need to be submitted.

You need to upload the following documents:

  • Detailed evidence of the reason for the request (e.g. medical certificate)

Application for disadvantage compensation (improvement of waiting time)

The request for disadvantage compensation can be submitted by applicants for degree programs with a limited number of places who were not able to obtain their university entrance qualification at an earlier point in time for reasons for which they were not at fault.

There may be circumstances that delayed your university entrance qualification. Applicants would then have less waiting time than they would have if they had completed their schooling on time. If this request is accepted, an earlier date for the university entrance qualification is taken as a basis when calculating the waiting period. The affected applicants can then participate in the selection procedure with the waiting time that would probably have been achieved without the delays.

Proof of the reason for the request (e.g. prolonged illness) is not sufficient in itself for the application to be recognized. Additional evidence must be provided that this reason delayed you from getting your university entrance qualification. This must be accompanied by a certificate from the school stating the reason for and duration of the delay, as well as any other supporting documents that you can use to prove the circumstances of the delay. The request cannot be processed without the appropriate documentation.

As part of the online application for Bachelor's programs with a limited number of places, you can submit a request to compensate for this delay and upload the required proof. No paper documents need to be submitted.

You need to upload the following documents:

  • Report cards showing the repetition of a school year
  • Statement from the school
  • If necessary, medical certificate or other suitable proof

Application for disadvantage compensation (improvement of average grade)

The request for disadvantage compensation can be submitted by applicants for degree programs with a limited number of places who were not able to obtain a better grade on their university entrance qualification for reasons for which they were not at fault.

If such circumstances and their effects are proven and the request for disadvantage compensation is approved, the application will participate in the selection process with an improved average grade/score.

Evidence of the circumstances that led to poorer grades (e.g., a month-long hospital stay) is not sufficient by itself to support the claim. Evidence must be provided in the form of a statement from the school (not the teacher) that, taking into account the overall development of performance over many years, establishes for each subject under consideration what better grade or higher score would have been expected if the impairment had not occurred. The resulting better average grade or higher total score for the university entrance qualification must be stated in the report.

As part of the online application for Bachelor's programs with a limited number of places, you can submit a request to compensate for this delay and upload the required proof. No paper documents need to be submitted.

You need to upload the following documents:

  • Confirmation from the school showing the improved average grade/score

Consideration as part of the top athletes quota (persons of public interest with a local connection)

1% of the applicants for degree programs with a limited number of places who belong to an Olympic squad, team sports squad, perspective squad, supplementary squad, or junior squad 1 of a national professional association of the German Olympic Sports Confederation formed at the federal level and who are bound to the study location Hohenheim due to justified circumstances will be admitted in a preliminary selection procedure outside the selection ranking list.

If you meet the above definition, your admission will be decided under a separate quota. If admission through the quota is not possible, the admission decision is made through the selection or waiting period ranking list.

As part of the online application for Bachelor's programs with a limited number of places, you can submit a request to be considered for the quota and upload the required proof. No paper documents need to be submitted.

You need to upload the following documents:

  • Proof from the association
