In the 1770s, Duke Carl Eugen planned four barns to store the harvests symmetrical to the large axes at the corners of the area near the Palace. He placed them such that they made up the end of the Militärstraße. Today, three buildings from the middle of the 1780s are still standing. They are Fachwerk buildings on bases made out of hewn sandstone. The plaster was required as a fire prevention measure.
The barns, each around 400 square meters, have several large entryways / passages. For storage, two storage lofts are available that can be filled from a vehicle or with the help of a pulley. The traditional terms for the buildings are (from north to south): Spelt Barn, Experimental Field Barn, and Aftergrass Barn and refer to their uses during the 18th century.
Since the start of the 19th century, the barns no longer have specific purposes; they were often also used as machine storage sheds. The Aftergrass Barn was turned into the student communication center and, in reference to the reformist and preacher from the Peasants’ War, received the name “Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer”.
