Information Technology Specialist specializing in Systems Integration

The training program to become an information technology specialist specializing in systems integration takes trainees through various departements of the Communication, Information and Media Center (KIM). The Communication, Information and Media Center (KIM) as a central service institution of the University of Hohenheim has been tasked with coordinating, planning, managing, and operating communication engineering, digital information processes, and media management at the University. Through their hands-on involvement, trainees are introduced to key functions and various responsibilities of the training facility, thereby gaining a broad overview of the procedures and internal connections of a university.

The training program to become an information technology specialist specializing in systems integration is organized as part of Germany's dual system of vocational training. This means that trainees take theoretical classes at a vocational school (it.schule stuttgart, Stuttgart-Möhringen) in blocks (6-7 times per school year for 2 weeks at a time). 

In the remaining time, practical and theoretical skills are acquired at the workplace.

Trainees progress through the following departments and institutions:

  • Information Systems
  • IT Infrastructure
  • IT Security Management
  • IT Supprt, Clienet and Identity Management
  • Communication, e-learning and Print
  • Business and Finance: Central Purchasing

Trainees progress through these departments / institutions in intervals of one or more months.

During their training, trainees attend in-house seminars to supplement their vocational school education and to enhance their hands-on learning.

The final examination consists of two parts.

Part 1 tis taken in the fourth training semester, and part 2 at the end of the training program. The IHK Stuttgart determines the respective date.

Part 1 of the final examination covers the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the occupational profile positions as well as the subject matter to be taught in the vocational school curriculum for the first 18 months as specified in the training framework for the first 18 months.

For System Integration, part 2 of the final examination covers the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the occupational profile positions as well as the subject matter to be taught in the vocational school curriculum as specified in the training framework. Skills, knowledge, and abilities that were already the subject of Part 1 of the final examination should only be included here to the extent necessary for the determination of vocational ability.

In the field of System Integration, part 2 of the final examination includes the following examination areas:

  1. Planning and implementing a system integration project,
  2. Designing and administrating IT systems,
  3. Analyzing and developing networks and
  4. Economic and social studies.

Information technology specialists specializing in systems integration are eligible to apply to all vacant positions at the University. The subsequent hiring of former trainees as permanent employees, as well as future career development opportunities, depend both on institutional needs and on candidates' personal and professional performance.

Trainees are currently paid:

  • € 1,086.82 in the first year of training 
  • € 1,140.96 in the second year of training 
  • € 1,190.61 in the third year of training 

On 1 November 2024, the amounts will increase by a fixed sum of EUR 100, and on 1 February 2025 by a further fixed sum of EUR 50.
