Specialist in media and information services, specialization in librarianship

The training program to become a specialist in media and information services takes trainees through various departments of the Communication, Information and Media Center (KIM). The Communication, Information and Media Center (KIM) as a central service institution of the University of Hohenheim has been tasked with coordinating, planning, managing, and operating communication engineering, digital information processes, and media management at the University. Through their hands-on involvement, trainees are introduced to key functions and various responsibilities of the training facility, thereby gaining a broad overview of the procedures and internal connections of a university.

Training to become a specialist in media and information services follows the framework of Germany's dual system of vocational training, meaning that the classroom-based part takes place at Hermann Grundert School in Calw.

In the remaining time, practical and theoretical skills are acquired at the workplace.

Trainees progress through the following departments and institutions:

  • User Services
  • Media Processing
  • Information Systems
  • Finance Department Central Purchasing

  • During their training, trainees attend in-house seminars to supplement their vocational school education and to enhance their hands-on learning.
  • In addition, trainees complete internships at institutions of the other specializations of this training occupation.

  • After 1.5 years, trainees take written intermediate examination at the Regional Administratie Authority (Regierungspräsidium) in Karlsruhe.
  • The final examination consists of two parts.

    • The written part is divided into three areas: (1) acquiring and organizing media and information, (2) providing and transmitting media and information, (3) business and social studies.
    • In the practical part of the examination, examinees are asked to work on a practice-related task involving media and services. The task is meant as a starting point for the subsequent oral examination.

Specialists in media and informaton services are elegible to apply to open positions at the University of Hohenheim. The subsequent hiring of former trainees as permanent employees, as well as future career development opportunities, depend both on institutional needs and on candidates' personal and professional performance.

Trainees are currently paid:

  • € 1,086.82 in the first year of training 
  • € 1,140.96 in the second year of training 
  • € 1,190.61 in the third year of training 

On 1 November 2024, the amounts will increase by a fixed sum of EUR 100, and on 1 February 2025 by a further fixed sum of EUR 50.
