Information about internships

Communication Science (B.A.)


For students who started their studies in winter semester 2023/24 or later, the following applies:

In the Bachelor’s degree program in Communication Science, all students must complete a compulsory internship of at least 8 weeks.

For students who started their studies before the winter semester 2023/24, the following applies:
In the Bachelor’s degree program in Communication Science, all students must complete a compulsory internship of at least 12 weeks.

A completed vocational training in a key area of communication science or a relevant internship completed before starting the degree program can be recognized as a company internship.

Minimum duration of the internship

For students who started their studies in the winter semester 2023/24 or later:

  • 8 weeks
  • The internship should be carried out full-time and can be divided into a maximum of two sections.
  • Work-study positions cannot be recognized.
  • In addition, in the elective area the module “Internship” can be completed (6 credits). In this module, it is possible to recognize work-study positions.


For students who started their studies before WS 2023/24:

  • 12 weeks
  • The internship should be carried out full-time and can be divided into a maximum of three sections (exception see “Recognition of work-study positions”)

Where should the internship be done?

The company internship can be completed in the following professional fields:

  • Publishing and media management
  • Market and communication research
  • Communication management and public relations
  • Journalism
  • Policy advising and political communication
  • Online communication

Proof

To receive credit for your internship, you must submit the following documents to the Internship Office:

  • Original acknowledgement from your employer
  • Internship report

    • Length ca. 5-10 pages
    • General description of traineeship
      General description of the enterprise and the department in which you did your training
    • Description of personal responsibilities
      It should be clear what your tasks were and which processes you became familiar with.
    • Summary and rating of the traineeship

  • Proof that the internship report was read by your employer The summary need not be shown to your employer.

Recognition of work-study positions (applies only to students who began studying before winter semester 23/24)

  • 4 weeks of the internship can be credited through a work-study position.
  • For this purpose, a working student activity over at least four months with at least 10 hours of working time per week must be proven.
  • In this case, 8 weeks of full-time internship and at least 4 months of student work (at least 10 hours per week) must be completed.
  • The internship and working student activity do not necessarily have to be completed consecutively.
