Hohenheim and National Socialism

Conference on the historical review of the Nazi period and its consequences at German universities

26 February 2018 | 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. | Hohenheim Palace central building

With the transfer of power to the National-Socialists in January 1933, the standardization of German universities began. With their transformation into organs of the Führer, within a very short period of time, they lost large elements of their autonomy, some of which they had only gained a few years earlier.

The historical review of the Nazi period at German universities was a neglected area of research for a long time. In the meantime, however, most universities have taken a look at this chapter of their history. This has shown that the research field includes a broad array of topics. With the background of working through the Nazi period in Hohenheim, participants at the conference will discuss aspects such as careers of university presidents, forced labor, and coming to terms with the past.
