At each university, a semester fee must be paid that varies from university to university. At the University of Hohenheim, the semester fee is made of up the following elements:

Administrative fee   €80.00
Student services fee    €79.00
Student Parliament fee   €15.50
For the summer semester 2025 total:  €174.50

Tuition fees for international students from non-EU/EEA countries: €1,500

Tuition Fees for a second degree at the same level as a degree already completed (Zweitstudium): €650

Additional costs

In addition to the semester fees, there are also costs of living. According to the German National Association for Student Affairs (DSW), costs of living during studies are around €934 per month (DSW, October 2022). These costs include rent (the largest sum), food, clothing, study materials, transportation, and insurance as well as fees for phones, internet, and radio license fees. They also include leisure time activities. Of course, the actual amount will always depend on individual needs and the university location.

If you can’t or don’t want to live at home with your parents, you will need to find a room on the private market or get a spot in a residence hall. How easy or difficult it is to find a room will depend on the size, amenities, and location of the apartment as well as the university’s location.
The rental costs can therefore also differ greatly. That is why you should start looking for a room as soon as possible before your studies begin.

If you are at least 18 years old and have your own apartment, you must pay the media broadcasting fee! The regulations that apply to students can be found on the website for media broadcasting fees.

All students must have health and long-term care insurance: If you have not turned 25, you can remain insured with your parents’ family insurance.

If you have a part-time job or earn money e.g. in an internship, you should take note of the income restrictions, as this could otherwise mean that you can no longer be included with your parents’ family insurance.

If you are not insured through your parents, then until you turn 30 or until the completion of the 14th subject-related semester you can get a reduced rate for the statutory student health and long-term care insurance.

You can get low-priced food in the Hohenheim canteen.
