China Competence in Hohenheim (CHIKOH) Lecture series in the project “China Competence in Hohenheim”, Speaker: John-James Farquharson

Within the festive week’s program CHIKOH is proud to present the lecture “ChemChina as a State-owned Enterprise: Origin, Challenges and Approach to acquisitions outside China" by Mr. John-James Farquharson.

Recently, Chinese state-owned Enterprises (SOEs) are on a shopping spree abroad, buying well-known large companies, like the Swiss Syngenta and many cutting-edge technology companies of smaller size. This raises many questions such as:

  • What motivates Chinese SOE’s to make acquisitions in Europe?
  • What difficulties and limitations do they face outside China?
  • The dilemma of SOE’s: Provide employment AND reducing excess headcount
  • What challenges do Western Executives face working in an SOE-    environment?

These and more questions will be discussed by Mr. Farquharson, former Chief HR Officer for ChemChina-Bluestar and author of the book “In the Belly of the Dragon” (www.inthebellyofthedragon.com). He has spent about thirty years in the Chemical industry, in Finance, Sales, running a plant and HR, living and working in many different countries.

What possibilities are there to encourage taxpayers to be more honest? Prof. Dr. Nadja Dwenger will report on this in the Brown Bag Lecture.
