Who has the best idea to make our world greener? For the second time, the University of Hohenheim is calling on all students in grades 5 to 13 throughout Germany to submit their ideas for a greener future to the FUTURE MADE BY YOU creative competition.
Show us your idea for a green future
The competition, which takes place as part of the Science Year 2020/21 Bioeconomy, is aimed at all students who have fun and want to get active in matters of sustainability.
The aim of the competition is to motivate young people to think about a greener future and develop a creative idea to actively contribute to a more sustainable environment.
Whether alone or in a group, whether as a documentary or as a multimedia contribution - we are excited to se all your projects and submissions! In addition to a lot of fun in the development, prize money of up to € 300 awaits the best contributions. The winners are selected by an expert jury.
For those who want to delve deeper into the topic and are still looking for inspiring ideas, a free workshop will be offered as part of the competition. Information will be available on the website shortly.

What if waste and wastewater fertilized our fields?
Large amounts of organic waste and wastewater are generated in German households every day. In the joint project Rural Urban Nutrient Partnership (RUN), specialists are pursuing the vision of a recycling plant in which biowaste and domestic wastewater are converted into fertilizer, raw materials for bioplastics and plant charcoal, which in turn can be used in agriculture. How can such a concept be put into practice? How do farmers, consumers, and citizens rate such a solution? Anyone interested is invited to participate in our online discussion! BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg invites you to take a look at the "Showcase to the Future - Living in a Sustainable Bioeconomy" from 07 to 18 July 2021. Look forward to information and practical examples on the state strategy "Sustainable Bioeconomy Baden-Württemberg". The exhibition is taking place within the framework of "Treffpunkt Baden-Württemberg," an integral part of the annual garden show and a platform for the state's contributions. You can find us in the newly built plant house in the Villa Gardens.
Among the exhibits is one showing the research work of the Hohenheim Biorefinery Technical Center at the Untere Lindenhöfe, where chicory, bread, and coffee are converted into raw material for plastic production.

Ein Science-Slam ist ein Kurzvortragsturnier für Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen, bei dem wissenschaftliche Inhalte populärwissenschaftlich transportiert werden. Rund zehn Minuten haben die Slammerinnen und Slammer Zeit, um ihr Forschungsthema anschaulich und unterhaltsam dem Publikum zu präsentieren. Anschließend wird der Vortrag bewertet und der Slam-Champion gekürt. Das Haus der Wissenschaften organisiert im Wissenschaftsjahr 2020/21 Bioökonomie eine entsprechende Science-Slam-Reihe, bei dem auch ein Hohenheimer Forschender dabei ist.
Am Mittwoch, den 14.7.2021 wird Markus Götz vom Fachgebiet Konversionstechnologien nachwachsender Rohstoffe der einen Science-Slam-Vortrag mit dem Titel "Von der Idee zum Industrieverfahren - Das Tal des Todes" halten. Darin spricht er darüber wie der Weg von der Idee, über das Labor hin zur industriellen Anwendung funktioniert und nennt mögliche Gründe, warum und an welchem Punkt dies oft scheitert. Der studierte Konversionstechnologe wird Einblicke in sein Forschungsfeld Entwicklung von Bioraffinerien an der Universität Hohenheim und seine Visionen von einer nachhaltigen Plastikherstellung geben und versucht Wege aufzuzeigen wie man das Tal des Todes überleben könnte.
Alle Interessierten und Neugierigen sind herzlich eingeladen, den Science-Slam im Livestream zu verfolgen und fleißig Punkte zu vergeben!

Auch im Wissenschaftsjahr 2021 Bioökonomie tourt das Ausstellungsschiff MS Wissenschaft im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung quer durch Deutschland und nach Österreich. Auf dem Schiff erhalten Sie einen Einblick in die Bioökonomie, d.h. die nachhaltige Form des Wirtschaftens, die auf nachwachsende Ressourcen setzt. Es geht um Mikroorganismen und Rohstoffkreisläufe, um neue Wirkstoffe aus der Natur, Lebensmittel der Zukunft und um politische und gesellschaftliche Fragen, die sich auf dem Weg zu einer biobasierten Wirtschaft stellen. Unterschiedliche Exponate aus Wissenschaft und Forschung laden zum Entdecken, Ausprobieren und Mitmachen ein.
Mit an Bord der MS Wissenschaft ist das Exponat "Neues aus Biomüll" des Fachgebiets Konversionstechnologien nachwachsender Rohstoffe der Universität Hohenheim. Dieses befasst sich mit der Frage "Wie können Produkte aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen erzeugt werden, ohne dem Nahrungsmittelanbau Konkurrenz zu machen?". Viele Produkte können wir inzwischen aus Pflanzen statt aus Erdöl oder Kohle herstellen. Aber wenn wir Kleidung, Frischhaltedosen, Computergehäuse, Möbelteile, Medikamente und Materialien für Batterien mit biologischen Stoffen produzieren, entsteht ein neues Problem. Flächen, auf denen diese angebaut werden, stehen nicht mehr für unsere Nahrungsmittel zur Verfügung. Doch es gibt einen Ausweg: Wir verwenden die nicht-essbaren Nebenprodukte der Lebensmittel. Und je mehr Nahrung produziert wird, desto mehr steht von diesem Bioabfall zur Verfügung. Solange wir die daraus entstehenden Produkte benutzen, speichern sie Kohlenstoff. Werden diese am Ende verbrannt, geben sie nur so viel Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2) ab, wie die Pflanzen vorher zum Wachsen aufgenommen haben – sie sind also CO2-neutral.
Am 5. Juni startet die MS Wissenschaft in Hamburg. Von dort steuert das Schiff zunächst nach Norden bis Kiel. Von dort aus geht es in Richtung Süden durch Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz nach Bayern. Noch ein Abstecher nach Österreich, anschließend endet die Tour am 26. Oktober 2021 in Nürnberg. Insgesamt legt die MS Wissenschaft in 31 Städte an.
