The vineyard encompasses an area of 2.2 hectares and is divided into two sections: the “assortment,” in which 94 different grape varieties are grown for the purpose of demonstration, and the “experimental areas,” which are used to experiment with new varieties of grapes.
Upon the recommendation of the German Council of Science and Humanities, in 1964/1965, Hohenheim - then the Agricultural University of Hohenheim - was able to set up a Department of Viticulture. In 1970, today’s vineyard was placed on the Palace meadow.
In the parcels of land, experiments with fungus-resistant new breeds (Orion, Regent, Phoenix, Sirius) are compared with those that are not resistant to fungi (Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Schwarzriesling), for example, and studies on grape nutrition are carried out.
The wines from the varieties grown here are produced in the Palace Cellar and sold under the label “Hohenheimer Schlossberg.”
