The collection of the “Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Hygiene with an Animal Clinic” serves the purpose of teaching and demonstrations.
Some of the objects were produced and collected for teaching purposes at the Institute. Key parts were brought to Hohenheim after the School of Veterinary Medicine, which existed from 1821 to 1912 in Stuttgart, was closed. This holds true especially for the veterinary instruments, the historical muscle and organ specimens, and large parts of the hoof and horseshoe collection.
The Institute of Zoology’s collection includes numerous species of native birds, comparative anatomical specimens and depictions of the lifestyle of insects and the origin of various pets.
The xylotheque (wood library) from the 18th century is a unique aspect. It is made up of numerous boxes in the form of books that were each made out of wood from a certain type of tree and contain pressed leaves, dried fruits, and a description of the type of tree.
The collections are open to visitors. Upon request, tours can be given.
