On 24 June 1785, Duke Carl Eugen laid the cornerstone for the main building of the Hohenheim Palace. In 1970, it was found under the southeast pillar during a survey of the foundation.
The Hohenheim court diary wrote the following about the placement of the cornerstone: “...fruit, wine, and gold were not placed in the foundation as usual. His Serene Highness did not call it a Palace but a house and himself placed inside a capsule in which something was written and said very graciously here in the course of time one will find why I built this house, and I will put my bedroom over the cornerstone.”
The find confirmed the diary note. In addition to a plan of the main floor of the central building engraved in silver, the stone included a silver box lined with gold with the promised letter. Because the box was not soldered, water was able to enter and the letter was illegible.
