In early 1853, the “Branch Parish of Groß-Hohenheim” was given permission to establish its own cemetery on the premises. The permission was granted with a condition, however. That was that all associated costs had to be paid for by the Agricultural Academy itself. It was also responsible for the maintenance and administration of the cemetery.
It soon became clear that the cemetery, which enclosed 1/8 of an acre, was too small, and in 1887 it was doubled inside toward the north. With almost 200 burial sites, the cemetery was then large enough. Many Hohenheim professors have been laid to rest here.
Today, burials rarely take place in the Hohenheim Cemetery.
