BAföG-funded stays abroad
By means of a separate application, stays abroad (i.e. study periods or internships) can also be funded by means of BAföG. There are special authorities charged with the allocation of funds for stays abroad. One of the prerequisites in order to be eligible for obtaining such funds consists in at least one academic year in Germany.
Hereafter, within the EU member states, the entire course of studies, including the completion of the latter, is eligible for support on domestic terms. Outside the EU, the course of studies can be funded for up to one year in the first instance and up to five years altogether. In these instances, in addition to the funding in Germany (grants / loans), subsidies for e.g. extra charges, tuition fees and travel or health insurance costs can be granted. Hence, in some cases students not obtaining BAföG in Germany can still benefit from grants for their stay abroad.
