Erasmus+ program for study purposes in program countries (KA 131)

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s program for general and vocational education, youth, and sports. Various mobility measures in higher education, including student mobility for study purposes in program countries (KA 131, SMS), are funded under the umbrella of the EU education program. This program line is the largest exchange program at the University of Hohenheim.

Why Erasmus+?

The Erasmus+ mobility measure “mobility for study purposes” offers students the opportunity to study at a partner university in one of the 33 participating program countries in Europe.

Students can also complete several stays (study and/or internship) with a maximum total duration of 360 months per study phase (Bachelor’s, Master’s, doctoral student).

The aim of the Erasmus+ program is to strengthen social and cultural skills and improve students’ career prospects. The study abroad program also gives students the opportunity to experience another European academic system and to benefit from its teaching and learning methods. Students also get a chance to get to know the diversity of Europe, which promotes European values and a European identity among the students.

Program benefits

  • Over 150 cooperation agreements for specific subjects with partner universities in EU countries as well as Turkey and Norway
  • Simplified application procedure at the host university
  • Tuition fee waiver at the host university
  • Support during the preparation of the stay abroad (culture, language, organizational matters)
  • Possibility of academic recognition of credits earned abroad
  • Possibility of applying for Erasmus+ mobility grant for additional costs arising from studying abroad
  • Possibility of applying for additional funding

What does program participation involve?

Good to know

The Erasmus+ program offers many different opportunities. You can find all the Erasmus+ programs and explanations on the DAAD website.

The Erasmus+ program differentiates between program countries and partner countries. The programs countries are all EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey. Other countries around the world can become partner countries in some of the Erasmus+ projects.

The United Kingdom and Switzerland are not Erasmus+ program countries. The Swiss-European Mobility Program offers a suitable alternative for Switzerland.

Once a year, at least four weeks before the application deadline, the exchange places are officially advertised via the  AA-News on the University of Hohenheim intranet.
The contents of the respective announcement in the AA-News for the corresponding application procedure apply. Applications for exchange places are submitted exclusively via the online portal Mobility Online. The link to the application and further information can only be found in the corresponding announcement in the AA-News.

2. After the application deadline, the selection committee selects the students and offers them a place at a partner university.

3. If the applicant accepts the exchange place, the applicant will be nominated by the faculty’s program officer for a place at the partner university.

4. Finally, the applicants apply to the partner university. The partner university makes the final decision on admission.

Selection and award criteriaStudents are selected by the committee responsible for the particular program. Following the selection, the candidates are nominated at the partner universities. The partner university makes the final decision on admission. Students are selected based on the applications submitted on time in Mobility Online.

The criteria for the selection are primarily the subject-area and academic aptitude as well as the personal motivation for the planned stay and the relevance to the subject area. Additional extracurricular volunteer work is also considered. Applicants are ranked according to the listed criteria as well as the requirements and conditions of the partner institutions, and the exchange places are then assigned according to the ranking list.
