Program for February 2021

Topic of the month:

Climate change and Co. - This is why we need the bioeconomy

People around the world are currently facing major ecological challenges. One of the biggest is man-made climate change. This makes it necessary for today's economy to change - away from fossil raw materials and towards a sustainable use of natural materials and resources: towards the bioeconomy.
Off-topic events complement the thematic focus.

Unless otherwise noted, all events are held in German.

The Bioeconomy Lab at the University of Hohenheim is intended to create a regular exchange format for scientists at all career levels, in which all other interested university members can also participate. At the Bioeconomy Lab Forum, information is provided on current bioeconomy topics at the University of Hohenheim and an open-topic, informal exchange is facilitated.

Contents:

  • Current report by CBO Prof. Dr. Iris Lewandowski
  • Pitch from bioeconomy research by Prof. Dr. Andrea Kruse
  • Open forum on the bioeconomy at the University of Hohenheim

Host: Prof. Dr. Iris Lewandowski, Chief Bioeconomy Officer at the University of Hohenheim

Our demands on animal husbandry and meat production are high, but the realities are often quite different. Farmers are under enormous economic pressure due to dumping prices and see little room for maneuver to escape an industrial agricultural economy. In addition, species diversity in Central Europe has been declining dramatically.

Keeping grazing livestock, perhaps even outdoors year-round, in extensive near-natural grazing systems is a key to bringing together the diverse societal demands for animal welfare, climate protection, and halting biodiversity loss - at least on some farmland.

Prof. Enno Bahrs, director of the Department of Farm Management at the University of Hohenheim, and other specialists will shed light on this topic at the Pasture Congress 2021, using numerous pasture projects in Germany and abroad as examples.

Livestream | Wednesday, 24 February 2021 | 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Free participation | With registration

Event organizer: Academy for Nature and Environmental Protection Baden-Württemberg in cooperation with the Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences
and the Association for the Promotion of Near-Natural Pasture Landscapes of Southern Germany e.V.
