As a first step, those interested in doing a doctorate must find a professor who is willing to supervise their research project. It is important to give a good deal of thought to the area in which you would like to do your doctorate beforehand so that you can make suggestions when first contacting the professor.
At the University of Hohenheim there are the following institutes:
- Institutes in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences
- Institutes in the Faculty of Natural Sciences
- Institutes in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences
A doctorate can also be supervised by a professor at a university of applied sciences or the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW). In these cases, the doctoral committee appoints a professor from the respective faculty as a co-supervisor.
Based on an outline and a time schedule for the research project, the prospective doctoral candidate and supervisor both sign a doctoral agreement.
The joint signing of a doctoral agreement with the supervisor (and, if applicable, co-supervisor) is a prerequisite for submitting an application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate. The conclusion of this agreement is the responsibility of the prospective doctoral candidate.
The doctoral agreement is based on an exposé (detailed summary of project) and a timetable of the research project. The exposé and schedule must also be signed by the supervisor and the doctoral candidate.
The faculties’ "Doctoral Agreement" form can be found under "Doctoral Regulations and Forms“.
In the doctorate portal DOCATA, all doctorates at the University of Hohenheim are managed centrally. Those interested in starting a doctorate can register themselves at any time and set up their own DOCATA user account. When registering, a user account will be set up in DOCATA that the applicant can use to look at the current status of the process at any time. Registration in DOCATA is voluntary.
After completing the doctoral agreement, the Application for Acceptance as a Doctoral Candidate is filled out by the applicant in DOCATA, printed, and submitted to the Graduate Academy. Alternatively, the Hohenheim Graduate Academy provides the application forms necessary for the doctoral examination process.
Things to know about DOCATA
One key tool for quality assurance in doctoral programs is the registration of doctoral candidates as set down in the new State Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG). The University of Hohenheim has implemented these legal regulations by establishing the online database DOCATA.
