Facts

Project participants

Dr. Olga Renner, Dr. Markus Burkard (course instructor), Dr. Luigi Marongiu, Dr. Dr. Thomas Helling, Dr. Dr. Günther Adler, Prof. Dr. Dr. Sascha Venturelli (module supervisor)

Title and content of the funding project

Development and implementation of a diagnostic self-evaluation assessment for the drugs and nutrition module.
Students were required to complete the assessment, titled “Diagnostic Assessment – be optimally prepared” before the module. The aim was to ensure a uniform level of knowledge and enable lecturers to set the right priorities in the module.

Subject-related semester

Complete Master’s programs in Molecular Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition as well as interested students from other natural science Master’s programs.

Short and sweet

I am passionate about teaching…

“… because good teaching can also shape students’ careers. It can help them choose the focuses that best suit their personal interests when deciding on their future career.”

The teaching project allows students to…

“… identify before the module to what extent their existing knowledge is sufficient to follow the course optimally, and where they may need to catch up. The results also help lecturers to prepare optimally, by reducing repetition of what is already known and ensuring content is tailored precisely to the current course.”

My role in the teaching project:

“Joint development of the diagnostic assessment together with the drugs and nutrition teaching team. Course instructor and lecturer.”

Our goal…

“To share our enthusiasm for medicinal and food ingredients and their interactions, and to design the course in such a way that all course participants benefit and at the same time are encouraged and challenged.”

Teaching project

Idea generation:

After the formative assessment “self-improvement tool” had been successfully implemented and enabled a better understanding of what had been taught, now a digital tool was to be developed that would take into account the sometimes highly heterogeneous composition of courses from a wide range of disciplines with very different prior knowledge.

Project objective:

Optimal preparation of students for the module, and tailored preparation of the individual topics by lecturers, taking into account the students’ prior knowledge.

Current status / further steps / feedback / further development:

Currently, the diagnostic assessment is voluntary and it is made available a few weeks before the module starts. The feedback is predominantly very positive. However, there is a desire for the assessment to remain available for a longer period of time. Further development will primarily involve expanding, adapting and improving the pool of questions.

Characteristics of the teaching project

Intensive support

Contact with and support for students in preparation for the module.

Anonymity assured

Students know that their participation benefits the quality of the course, but do not have to fear any disadvantages in terms of grades if they do not perform well in the assessment.

Voluntary basis

Students are encouraged to participate, but are not required to do so. As drugs and nutrition is not a compulsory module and is regularly oversubscribed, participants in any case have a very high intrinsic motivation.

Discussion and synergies

What teaching concept do you find inspiring, what teaching concept would you like to try?

We find the idea of the “flipped classroom”, for example, very interesting if it is used appropriately.

Review and outlook

When you look back on the project support, what was particularly helpful for you?
The very competent, helpful and straightforward support from the Digital Coaches. Also a very good and interdisciplinary team in our Nutritional Biochemistry department, which made it easier to develop the specific questions.

What tip would you give to people who are interested in support?
It is really worth taking advantage of the help that the Digital Coaches offer, and discussing the concept in detail with them. Based on their experience, you can quickly see what is really feasible, and are also made aware of possible “stumbling blocks” at an early stage. This excellent support gives you the confidence you need, even if you want to try out seemingly unusual concepts.
