Translations

The Media & Marketing Department advises and supports University institutions with translations of texts from German into English and with proofreading of English texts. We are also happy to advise and assist with translations to and from other languages.

Because of limited capacities, there are different procedures depending on the institution:

Institutions

The University of Hohenheim has framework contracts with external translators. The University translator Kelly Neudorfer coordinates these orders. The institution placing the order is charged for the translation. Depending on the type of text, the costs are between 1.50€ and 2.25€ per standard line (55 characters including spaces). Proofreading jobs are charged by the hour. You can ask for a rough cost estimate in advance.

Step 1Fill out the translation request form
Step 2Coordinate the translation details
The Media & Marketing Department will contact the institution placing the order to coordinate the details and then obtains a quote from the translator.
Step 3Contract the job
If the quote is acceptable for the institution, the University’s translator contracts the external translator with the job.
Step 4
Implementation
After a quality control of the language by the University translator, the document is returned to the institution placing the order.

Central administration departments

Texts from departments in the Central Administration that are directed at a large group of students or employees are translated free of charge by the University translator Kelly Neudorfer.

Examples for these kinds of texts are:

  • Homepage texts
  • Brochures
  • Transcript templates
  • Election documents for University elections
  • Forms
  • Contract templates

Please contact Kelly Neudorfer and send her the texts that are to be translated.

Tips for a smooth translation

  • Preparation: Notify AH of translations / proofreading in advance: The coordination work can then be done ahead of time and everything is ready when the German text is complete. At least 4 business days of lead time is recommended. For requests with a shorter lead time, it is possible that the translators will not be available.
  • How long does a translation take: For a high-quality, professional translation, calculation 2,000 words / day. In exceptional cases, translators can translate faster, but then a rush fee often applies (approx. 10-30%). If certain sections of the text are already complete, it is sometimes possible to deliver them before the rest of the text so the translator can start working. The other sections can be delivered later.
  • File formats: Please send the text as a Word file. PDF files should be avoided, as the formatting work necessary after the translation is much higher.  The translator is happy to discuss other file types.
  • Terminology: If certain English terms should be used in the translation, they can be delivered with the text in an Excel file (Column A with the German term, Column B with the English term).
