Gardens

Giant trees over 200 years old, rare Magnolia trees, a promenade lined with poplars: The Hohenheim Gardens’ parks invite visitors to be astonished and enjoy themselves. As a scientific institution, the Hohenheim Gardens support research and teaching at the University of Hohenheim. The incredible variety of more than 8,000 plant species makes the free stroll through the parks a unique garden experience for every visitor.

Nature is always in season here: Whether it’s the Botanical Garden or the Baden-Württemberg Landesarboretum with the Exotic Garden and Landscape Garden: The park, encompassing 30 hectares, offers new sights during all seasons of the year. The xylotheque and an online plant catalog provide those interested in nature with detailed information.

Spielhaus building and Monopteros: Buildings from the ducal period and modern works of art ensure encounters between architecture and horticultural art. The “Historical Tour” leads visitors on an uncommented walk to the most important historical stops.

Botanical Garden

Park experience around the Hohenheim Palace: The Palace Park (formerly the Old Botanical Garden) forms a half-circle around Hohenheim’s landmark. Winding paths lead through majestic trees, grassy fields, and meadows and invite visitors to stroll and linger in the ducal atmosphere. The Xylotheque and Information System for the Hohenheim Gardens make the walk to a learning experience. Unique garden worldwide: The new Botanical Garden leads through various aspects of vegetation history - from the ice age until the Middle Ages.

The duke’s “English Garden”: The Exotic Garden makes an impression with its extraordinary tree population. It comes from the time of the first park, constructed by Duke Carl Eugen and Franziska von Hohenheim. Together with the Landscape Garden, the Exotic Garden makes up the so-called Landesarboretum Baden-Württemberg, a collection of horticulturally and botanically interesting trees. With the Kleingehölzgarten, the bush terrace at the Spielhaus building, and the rhododendron area at the Römisches Wirtshaus, there are more than 2,400 different kinds of deciduous and coniferous trees, varieties, and forms from over 80 plant families and 270 species.

Buildings from ducal times: The “Historical Path” leads you to all the important stations in the Hohenheim Gardens, for example the Spielhaus building (with museum) or the Römisches Wirtshaus.

Landscape Garden

Quality of life in an architecturally designed landscape: The Landscape Garden, kept close to its natural state, is the youngest part of the Hohenheim Gardens. Exposed views and surprising paths in the newly created natural space offers a chance for relaxation and experiencing nature in addition to aiding in the teaching of the University students. In the Landscape Garden, visitors can follow and marvel at the development of a relatively young garden. The trees planted there can be found in the Landesarboretum’s wood database and the Hohenheim Gardens’ information system.

Together with the Landscape Garden, the Exotic Garden makes up the so-called Landesarboretum Baden-Württemberg, a collection of horticulturally and botanically interesting trees.
