Exchange students and free movers

Application as exchange student or free mover

Hohenheim has long been a university with a strong international orientation and maintains contacts with numerous partner universities. About 12% of the nearly 10,000 students come from abroad - and from more than 100 countries. If you would also like to be part of this group, whether as an exchange student or as a free mover, you will find all the information you need for your application here.

Who can apply to be an exchange student or free mover?

Exchange students

There is a bilateral agreement between your home university and the University of Hohenheim. You must first be selected for the stay abroad at your home university, and can then apply at Hohenheim.

Free movers

There is no exchange agreement between your home university and the University of Hohenheim. Instead, you organize the study abroad yourself. The requirement is that you are enrolled as a student at a university abroad and remain so throughout your stay with us. Your home university and your degree program must be equivalent to a German university and be a Bachelor’s or Master’s program.

Both exchange students and free movers are enrolled as non-degree students. As a non-degree student, you can attend lectures and take module exams. If you have the approval of a Hohenheim professor, you may also collaborate on a research project. If applicable, the coursework and examinations can be credited at your home university, but you cannot obtain a degree at Hohenheim and your time is limited to a maximum of 2 semesters.

Research internships

If you have received an acceptance for a research project or an internship from a Hohenheim professor that does not involve attending lectures, you may still be admitted and enrolled as a non-degree student. The application process for non-degree students is the same as for a study visit. However, the requirement is that you have already found a supervisor at Hohenheim and that you are studying at Bachelor’s or Master’s level in your home country.

Erasmus+ internships are an exception. For more information, please visit the information page for exchange students and free movers studying at the University of Hohenheim.
